Choosing the Right Filter Media for Your Bionizer Pool: A Comprehensive Guide

Maintaining a pristine pool requires selecting the right filter media. For Bionizer pools, the type of filter media you use can significantly impact water quality and overall pool maintenance. Here’s an in-depth guide to help you choose the best filter media for your Bionizer pool system.

Why Filter Media Matters

Filter media plays a crucial role in keeping your pool clean. It traps debris, dirt, and contaminants, ensuring your water remains clear and inviting. The effectiveness of your filter media impacts how well your pool maintains balanced water chemistry and overall hygiene.

Recommended Filter Media for Bionizer Pools

1. Coarse and Fine Glass

Coarse Glass: This type of glass should be placed at the bottom of the filter. Coarse glass particles are approximately 5mm in size. It provides a robust first layer of filtration, capturing larger debris effectively.

Fine Glass: Place fine glass on top of the coarse glass. The fine glass has smaller particles, around 3mm in size, which helps to trap smaller particles and fine debris, ensuring superior water clarity.

Silica Sand as a Third Option: Silica sand is a viable alternative to glass media. It offers good filtration, though it is not as effective as glass media. It is generally used as a backup option when glass media is not available.

Filter Media Lifespan

Filter media should be replaced periodically to maintain optimal filtration performance:

Glass Media: Replace every 5 years or as needed. Regularly check the condition of your glass media to ensure it is performing efficiently.

Cartridge Filters: If your pool uses a cartridge filter, make sure the cartridge is in good condition. Regularly clean the cartridge by unscrewing the lid, removing the filter, and hosing it off.

TYPES WE ADVISE AGAINST!

1. Avoid Zeolite

Zeolite is a type of filter media known for its ability to absorb certain contaminants. However, it also has a significant drawback—it absorbs copper. Since maintaining appropriate copper levels is crucial for pool water balance and effectiveness, we do not recommend zeolite for Bionizer pools.

2. Avoid River Sand

River sand might seem like a natural choice, but it’s not suitable for Bionizer pools. River sand tends to trap copper, making it challenging to manage copper levels in the pool water.

Converting from Salt Chlorinator to Bionizer

If you are transitioning from a salt chlorinator to a Bionizer system, you do not need to empty your pool. Instead, test the pool water and bring it into balance using the Snap Pool Balance Chart as your guide. This transition can be seamless with proper water testing and adjustment.

Filter Types and Maintenance

Sand and Glass Filters: These filters typically have a large handle on top. This handle changes the position for backwashing and cleaning out the sand or glass. Regular backwashing helps maintain filter efficiency.

Cartridge Filters: These are cylindrical in shape. To clean a cartridge filter, unscrew the lid, remove the cartridge, and hose it off. Ensure the cartridge is in good condition to maintain optimal filtration.

Conclusion

For the best filtration performance in your Bionizer pool, use a combination of coarse and fine glass media. Avoid zeolite and river sand, and consider silica sand if glass media is unavailable. Regularly check and replace filter media as needed to keep your pool in top condition.
